The Freedom to Say Goodbye: Queensland’s Scattering Regulations

One of the most frequent questions we receive is, "Do I need a permit to scatter ashes in Queensland?" The good news is that the Queensland State Government generally does not require a permit for scattering ashes on land or water for small, private ceremonies.

When Do You Need a Permit?

While the rules are permissive, there are three critical exceptions:

1. Private Property: You must always obtain permission from the landowner before scattering.

2. Commonwealth Reserves: A permit is mandatory for scattering within Commonwealth marine reserves or national parks managed by the federal government.

3. Council Parks: While usually allowed, some councils may have designated areas. It is always best to check with the local Brisbane or Gold Coast council if you plan to use a public garden.

Technical Tips for a Dignified Scattering

Mind the Wind: Always stand upwind to ensure remains are carried away from the participants. Failing to do this can lead to a distressing "blow-back" effect.
